IS YOUR DISASTER RECOVERY CENTRE FLOOD PRONE?
WILL ITS ACCESS ROUTES BE UNDER WATER?
When contracting Disaster Recovery facilities in the East Midlands / East Anglia regions it’s imperative that ‘due diligence’ is exercised with respect to:
- The potential for the Disaster Recovery Centre itself to be flooded
- The likelihood of all access routes to the centre being flooded
- Scope to transport staff to/from your location and/or accommodate them
Nene Valley
The Nene Valley has a history of flooding, Better building development control and flood defences on the upper Nene have improved control, but the risk remains substantial
Fens & Washlands
The East Coast has suffered flooding from the sea throughout history. Low lying areas and fenlands near or at sea level extend inland as far as Peterborough and Market Deeping.
Rising sea levels and global warming effects may exasperate the potential. A break in The Wash could lead to a large scale disaster with potential for protracted power outages, disrupted telecommunications and sewage contamination. The availability of diesel and gas may be minimal as there will be substantial needs for this in the clear up operation.
Illustrative flood risks:
Regional -
- Huntingdon – partial flooding
- Peterborough – partial flooding
- Cambridge – partial flooding
- Northampton – partial flooding to centre, Brackmills area & road systems
Locality -
- Market Deeping – partial flooding & access isolation (a probable island!) Click here to see puddle
- Spalding – complete flooding
- Whittlesey – complete flooding
- Wisbech – complete flooding
DSM’s Centre
DSM’s Disaster Recovery Centre is not liable to flood. It sits above the 30 metre contour and has multiple access routes. It also has substantial reserves of generator diesel and tanks for its mains-independent gas heating system. It is shortly to install a water tower for complete self sufficiency.
